CNEWS: Canada tables UN resolution over Iran

OTTAWA (CP) - Canada has tabled a resolution at the UN General Assembly protesting deteriorating human rights in Iran.

Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew said in a statement Friday that Canada's assessment is the human rights situation in Iran has worsened during the last year.

He added that many members of the international community agree with that assessment.

Pettigrew said Canada believes that Iran needs to hear from the global community that change is necessary.

The resolution was presented with 33 co-sponsors.

It calls upon Iran to make improvements in several areas, including independence of the judiciary, arbitrary detentions, freedom of expression, freedom of the media, treatment of women and treatment of religious minorities.

The Canadian Coalition for Democracies welcomed the resolution.

The group's president said "this resolution could be an important step in Canada realizing its potential as a moral superpower."
